Looking ahead to 2025, I've been mulling over the idea of resuming my bicycle ride. I don't know when it'll ever feel like perfect timing, but the more I consider it, the more it feels like 2025 may offer me the time to commit 60 days to the bicycle and the TransAmerica Bicycle Route (TABR).
I'd be looking at close to 3,000 miles of cycling, from Goreville, Illinois to Florence, Oregon. That's a long way! But I've drafted my schedule and it brings me joy and anticipation rather than fear or stress. I'm not sure how much prep I can do ahead of time to get ready for a cross-country ride, outside of increasing my cardio and adding some strength training. Preparing for a long-distance ride isn't like marathon training. If my daily mileage is approximately 60 miles, I'm not going to be cycling anywhere near that before I'm on my actual ride. I also won't be riding 20-30 miles a day to get ready, because that would take me 2-3 hours and I'm not sure I want to give up that time daily (or even several times a week). I *could* see riding a 20-30 mile ride once a week starting in March. But there doesn't seem to be a good way to train for 300-400 miles of riding every week before I'm actually *on my bike* and riding westward. I'll be sure to update here as I move forward!
